SCI is a unique international forum where science meets business on independent, impartial ground which anyone can join. Its main objective is to promote the application of science for the benefit of society. It encourages and supports scientific endeavour while engaging with the outside business world.

Governance

SCI's governance structure ensures that an appropriate range of skills and experience exists within the board of trustees and there is an open line of communication between trustees and the directors and managers running the day-to-day business of the Society.

SCI believes in international accessibility, being collaborative, protecting its independence and public trust and demonstrating thoughtful responsibility, which embraces diversity.

History

Originally established in 1881, SCI is a registered charity with individual Members in over 70 countries. The America International Group was established just three years later.

SCI's first conference is on smoke abatement followed by one on the safety of food and drink

1906

William Perkin, an early SCI president, receives the inaugural Perkin Medal to celebrate his discovery of the first synthetic dyestuff, mauveine

1928

Arthur D Little, chemical engineer and founder of the management consultancy firm, elected SCI World President

1944

Alexander Fleming, discover of penicillin, delivers the SCI Lister Lecture

1985

Harold W Kroto, later Nobel Laureate and SCI Honorary Member, discovers carbon molecules in the form of 'buckyballs' with Richard Smalley
